Om föremålet

POLK'S SALT LAKE CITY DIRECTORY 1908: Including the City of Murray, Ft.Douglas, Garfield and all the Suburbs and Suburban Towns. Containing a Complete Alphabetical List of Business Firms, Corporations and Private Citizens. INCLUDES a FOLD-OPEN MAP, tipped in next to the title page. A Directory of every resident of SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH and VICINITY, in 1908. Published by R. L. Polk & Company, Salt Lake City, 1908. This is the Original, Vintage Directory. Rebound in Library Hardcovers, complete original volume bound within including the advertising pages, 6x9 inches, thick volume, 1392 pages. The folding map measures approximately 22x28 inches. Contains numerous advertisements of the day. These directories were published as advertising vehicles so ads are everywhere, including a section of ads at the front, some with illustrations. This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There is a Sutro shelving number on the spine, a Sutro Library bookplate on the front pastedown, and Sutro Library ink stamps and some associated library marks, stamps and labels here and there throughout. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books originally collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home at SFSU the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it's just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time. GOOD CONDITION: The covers are recent library re-bindings with shelving numbers etched on the spine, they are solid and sharp cornered, the endpapers are also recent; the original 1908 work is bound within, complete including the blue pages of advertising at the front. Internally, there are ex Sutro library markings and labels as noted above, the blue paper ads at the front are toned, especially at the margins, otherwise the inner pages are just lightly used and still tight, bright, clean and clear. Overall a nice, solid copy. THE MAP is lightly toned, it is clipped closely at the right edge (see photo), has a couple small holes on a number of panels (as if from a staple that has been removed), and it has some splitting at a couple folds, but overall is solid, bright, clear, and suitable for framing. A COMPLETE, ORIGINAL 1908 DIRECTORY of RESIDENTS and BUSINESSES of SALT LAKE CITY and Vicinity, with a great MAP. A treasure trove of Utah and Mormon genealogy. About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned): The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830–1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S. Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.
