Om föremålet

The Minkisi (plural of Nkisi) consist in a true incarnation of a spiritual entity which submits itself under human control through the means of rites. They are used to solve all sorts of problems (illnesses, sterility, conflicts...).The Minkisi were also custodians of the collective memory of the clan and could also occasionally be used to avenge the innocent by inflicting a sudden illness on perjury or killing it.Usually, they are anthropomorphic sculptures which measure between 15 and 30 cm high, they have a ventral cavity in which a magical load: the bilongo, is inserted. This is made of diverse vegetable and animal substances, stored in the cavity, closed by a resiniferous plug decorated with shells or a mirror. The mirror allowed the soothsayer to detect the approach of sorcerers from each of the four directions. The act of closing this receptacle is not insignificant because it indicates that the powers invoked can be controlled. It is the soothsayer, the Nganga, who stores the load during a ceremony, which activates the powers of the figurine with the help of multiple palpations.
