Just touches of wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, cloth clean and bright, silver bright, frontispiece in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. The binding designer, Frank Berkeley Smith [1869-1931] was a noted author, as well as an illustrator and designer, active from 1897 to 1916. Working largely in the poster style, Smith was a prolific cover designer, and according to Gullans/Espey, he worked "in outline or with pure color areas without outline." He died in Artennes, France, where he lived with his wife, Jeanne Constentin Chester Smith. A fine copy for any collector of Frank Berkeley Smith. John Watson [pseudonym Ian Maclaren, 1850-1907] was a Scottish Presbyterian clergyman in Liverpool [1880-1905] and author who won fame with BESIDE THE BONNIE BRIER BUSH (1894), which was followed by other portrayals of humble Scottish life. He was a member of the kallyard school and wrote several religious works as well.
