Om föremålet

A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original ornate green binding (slight rubbing to the board corners and spine ends, a bit of oxidation to the board and spine decoration and lettering), in a Fine example of the RARE illustrated dust jacket (a few small tape repairs dust jacket's verso), complete with 7 color illustrations (each with a tissue guard) and dozens of woodcuts. The volume also contains a color map of the Sahara to the book's rear. The map is in Fine condition and, having come cleanly detached, is loosely laid in. Dr. Josef Chavanne (1846-1902) was an Austrian geographer and noted explorer of Africa who wanted in this book "to present a vivid and correct conception of the Sahara, the multifarious natural character of its individual natural regions, the life, customs and habits of its inhabitants to the reader in vivid portrayal Eyes lead." A BEAUTIFUL AND REMARKABLE COPY WHICH IS MENTIONED ON PAGE 88, AND OF WHICH AN IMAGE APPEARS ON PAGE 89, of Mark Godburn's excellent work titled "Nineteenth-Century Dust-Jackets" published by Oak Knoll Press in the US and by Private Libraries Association in the UK. Of this book, Godburn states: "Another German jacket is one of the more attractive examples produced in any country during the mid-Victorian period. 'Die Sahara oder Von Oase zu Oase' (1879) was bound in green cloth ornately decorated in black and gold with gilt insets of a camel, a horse and robed natives. The front of the cream-coloured jacket was covered with a large illustratration that did not appear in the book. It depicted an oasis-like settlement in the foreground with temples and gardens shimmering in the distance, all bordered by palms and other flora. At the foot of the illustration was the signature of the Viennese printer R. V. Waldheim. The jacket spine was printed and there was extensive advertising on the back. The book was an expensive production inside and out with silk endpapers, a large folding map in colour, and tissue-guarded lithographic plates in addition to the beautiful binding and lovely jacket. Some booksellers and purchasers must have wondered whether to display the binding alone or in the jacket." [Please Note: Due to the book's weight, international shipping costs to Buyer will exceed the amount quoted by this site. US Postal regulations require that international shipment be by Priority Mail.] A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL DUST JACKET.
