Volumes I and II, number 176 of 426 copies, 1207 pp., signed by artist William T. Wiley. The story that many consider to be the earliest novel written and a seminal work of Western literature, the tragi-comical figure of Don Quixote and his faithful companion Sancho Panza have become part of our culture, as has the phrase "tilting at windmills". The set is lavishly illustrated by William T. Wiley, who has exhibited at the Venice Biennial, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.; Wiley produced forty-two illustrations for Volume I and fifty-five for Volume II. This publication by the Arion Press uses the the Edith Grossman translation of Cervantes' work, considered to be the unsurpassed version in English. The effort required to produce this work must have been intensive; in his cover letter to subscribers, Andrew Hoyem wrote "Please be patient. Cervantes has had to wait over four hundred years for this treatment of and homage to his masterpiece. You will not have to wait that long." ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter dark brown goatskin with tan goatskin boards, the front board with a DQ monogram in gold designed by Wiley, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges rough cut, brown endpapers, the sections were sewn by hand with hand-sewn headbands at top and bottom, title pages in rust and black, initial capital letters were drawn by Mallette Dean in 1963 for the Grabhorn Press; Centaur type, all-cotton paper; quarto size (10.25" by 7.5"), pagination: Volume I: [1-5] 6-574 [575] [1 colophon]; Volume II: [1-5] 6-627 [628-630] [1 colophon], one of 426 copies, this number 176, signed by William T.
