Medieval Manuscript Calendar Leaf Art, Architecture & Design

Om föremålet

on vellum. Illuminated leaf heightened in gold. 5 x 3 inches. A calendar leaf for the month of August, from a Dutch manuscript most likely of the mid to late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. The calendar's columns include the golden numbers (the roman numerals in the left-most column) and Dominical letters, which together allowed for the calculation of when Easter would fall in any given year. The featured saints in this calendar leaf are written in red rubrics -- the origin of the term "red-letter day" and include the martyr Laurence, the apostle Bartholomew, and Saint Jans Onthoefding, or John the Baptist (John the beheaded, in Dutch) -- the emphasis on the beheading of St John the Baptist might help localize this manuscript to the North Brabant either in origin or in intended use. The hand is a clear and fine gothic with slightly forked ascenders, lined in dark sepia ink for the textblock. on vellum. Illuminated leaf heightened in gold. 5 x 3 inches
