Three volumes, wide octavos (6 x 8½"); 232, 314, 405 pages, large paper edition illustrated with 20 full-page engravings of famous American orators, most with facsimiles of their signatures (inquire for detailed list and sample photos). Text is set in a very readable font (evidently that of the smaller, more common 16mo edition) on quality laid paper with wide margins. The impressive engravings are printed on a heavier white wove paper, each protected with a tissue guard. Condition is overall Very Good+ to Near Fine. Contents are clean, bright and tight, engravings are Fine (very slight corner stain to Washington frontispiece, vol. 1); no names, writing, labels nor bookplates. However, the covers of volume two have a three inch damaged strip at the seams of leather and board, the same but much less so to volume one (please see photos); slight darkening of spines; otherwise covers are tight, sharp and un-worn. A handsome set of history-making speeches by outstanding politicians of the day on topics from American Colonialism through the Civil War and Reconstruction. The complete three volume illustrated set, scarce in this first deluxe edition at a reasonable price.
