The finest American electric train ever offered at auction based on significance, rarity, and condition. Lionel 20th Century Limited State Set consisting of a 400E black loco, 400W whistle tender, 412 California Pullman, 413 Colorado Pullman, 414 Illinois Pullman, and 416 New York Observation. All four green passenger cars have rare yellow window inserts. This incredible set was purchased by our consignor in 1988 from the estate of the original owner and is 100% original, matched, and unaltered. This set has several notable differences from the three car version catalogued in 1931 thru 1933. A fourth passenger car, 414 Illinois Pullman with yellow window inserts was added by Lionel. This may be the only like new boxed example of this car in existence. The loco and tender have a satin black finish, rare black painted boiler bands, and black number boards. The tender has a whistle. Being incredibly picky, the loco and tender are not absolute perfection but very close, the best 400E I have ever seen, C9+. The cars are like new and have fresh looking paint but have a few extremely minor flaws. They have a few tiny nicks. The 413 Colorado does have a small spot of paint missing about half the size of a dime on the front side of roof, C8. The set has very light run time. The set box is dated 1932 and has a fantastic label stamped 433E. Above the label is stamped BROWN-IVORY and below the label GM. There is some damage on one corner of set box but overall an outstanding set box, especially considering this is the ONLY KNOWN 433E set box. Loco and tender boxes are dated 1936. The 400E OB has insert. The car boxes are all stamped SPEC. GREEN IVORY on ends. All OBs including set box have matching tape. All individual OBs are sealed on one end, very high grade, C9+. The original shine and look of this set has been agreed by many collectors as by far the best standard gauge set they have ever seen. Best of the Best! Contact Stout Auctions for additional photo.
