THE PROPERTY OF A VISIONARY HONG KONG COLLECTOR

The reference 6264 in 18k gold with “lemon” dial (also known as “limoncello” by Italian collectors) is among the rarest production Daytona models and gains its name from the intense yellow colour of the dial, which is distinctly different from the more common champagne Paul Newman dials usually found on reference 6241. What makes it even more striking is the white printing for the markers to the subsidiary dial, giving an intense contrast that immediately draws the eye.

Unsurprisingly for such an elusive watch the case numbers are extremely tightly grouped and exclusively in 18k gold with all of the public auction results spanning less than 100 case numbers between 2’357’384 and 2’357’468. In addition an example is illustrated in John Goldberger’s 100 Superlative Watches with case number 2’357’363 bringing the range to just over 100 case numbers. Amazingly the example offered here with case number 2’357’347 represents the earliest to come to market and what is truly astounding is the condition of the watch.

With a dial that has no signs of service marks or ageing and all of the luminous plots not only present and complete, but attractively aged to a warmer tone that matches the hour and minute hands, it has also retained its original and extremely rare Mark 1 bezel and small arrow tip chronograph hand. The case is truly remarkable with its full proportions and original finish in place, while the hallmarks and engraving show the definition and idiosyncrasies as though they left the factory only recently. With its correct case back stamped inside with 6241 and hammer number 136 for Spillman, plus the poinçon de maître mark on the outside (required for sale in France), removing it reveals a radiant movement that shows no signs of heavy servicing from an unskilled watchmaker, proving that it has been well cared for in the 40 plus years since it was created.

Following on from Christie’s watch department setting the record for this model at auction during its June 2017 New York auction, realising US$871,500 for case number 2'357'452, it is an immense pleasure to bring another exceptional example of this highly coveted and extremely rare reference to market.

> Some watches are pictured with straps made of endangered or protected animal materials such as alligator or crocodile. These endangered species straps are shown for display purposes only and are not for sale. Christie’s will remove and retain the strap prior to shipment from the sale site. At some sale sites, Christie’s may, at its discretion, make the displayed endangered species strap available to the buyer of the lot free of charge if collected in person from the sale site within 1 year of the date of the sale. Please check with the department for details on a particular lot.

> Prospective purchasers are advised that several countries prohibit the importation of property containing materials from endangered species, including but not limited to coral, ivory, tortoiseshell and crocodile. Accordingly, prospective purchasers should familiarize themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import this lot into another country.
