License leaf dated 23 August 1689, title within double-ruled border, divisional title for An Essay Concerning the True Original, Extent, and End of Civil Government, with continuous pagination and register; lacks errata leaf, light text browning thoughout. Contemporary calf paneled in blind, board edges roll-tooled gilt, fore- and bottom edges sprinkled red; sprinkling on covers oxidized, spine ends bumped, upper joint cracked.\nFirst edition, first issue. With quire Q in the first setting: Q2r begins "Besides the Crime" and leaf Q4 is signed. The first part consists of animadversions on Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha  while the second part delineates the principles of modern democracy.
