Over three thousand years ago, long before the Aztecs or Maya built their empires, the Olmecs ground concave mirrors from hematite, magnetite, and ilmenite along the Gulf of Mexico to an optical precision that still astonishes today—parabolic reflectors, smooth enough to concentrate sunlight and start fires. These mirrors were not everyday objects: rulers and shamans wore them as symbols of power, as tools to peer into other worlds and to tame the power of the sun itself. In the La Venta tombs they were found alongside jade and cinnabar, accompanied by a figure known as the "Lord of the Mirror." Exactly such a mirror opens at the back of this skull: a dark, hematite-black surface, smooth and deep enough to clearly reflect one’s own face. And right in the middle of this black mirror unfolds the piece’s most intense chatoyance—a golden sheen, as if a bit of captured sunlight had truly settled there. From there, the play of light extends, unpredictable and endlessly surprising, across dots, bands, and surfaces over the entire skull, never following a predictable path. Tiger Iron Eye is a composite of Tiger’s Eye, hematite, and jasper from Precambrian banded iron formations. Its chatoyance results from the complete displacement of fibrous crocidolite crystals by quartz while preserving the fibrous structure—precisely the geological process that underpins the mirror-like quality of hematite-rich material, which, when sufficiently polished, densifies into a reflective surface. A skull that bears not only the eye of the tiger but also the mirror of a ruler. Material: Tiger Iron Eye (Tiger’s Eye, Hematite, Jasper) Origin: Western Australia, Pilbara region Dimensions: 5.1 x 3.4 x 3.6 cm Weight: 105 g Special features: Reflective, smooth hematite-black surface at the back with the piece’s most intense chatoyance; in addition, irregular chatoyance points and bands scattered across the entire skull
