1783 John Chalmers Shilling. W-1790. Rarity-4. Birds, Long Worm. EF-40 (PCGS).

Uncommonly Choice John Chalmers Shilling Long Worm Type 1783 John Chalmers Shilling. W-1790. Rarity-4. Birds, Long Worm. EF-40 (PCGS). The Long Worm counterpart to the Emerald Coast collector's Chalmers Short Worm shilling offered above, and an equally premium example. The obverse (incorrectly mounted as the reverse in the PCGS holder) is aligned to 3 o'clock with no border denticulation at right, but it is boldly to sharply defined elsewhere with an uncommon amount of finer detail to the clasped hands at center. The reverse is better aligned, full if a bit uneven border denticulation, all design elements bold with a complete snake, birds and worm scene in the center. A shallow straight clip is seen at 2:30 on the obverse, but the planchet is otherwise choice, and the surfaces are devoid of post-production blemishes. An even endowment of warm, original mauve-gray patina to both sides rounds out a truly impressive list of attributes for highly desirable example. Chalmers, a silversmith, patriot, and Annapolis mover-and-shaker, went broke soon after his coinage was produced, became an itinerant preacher, freed his slaves, and became an outspoken advocate for the abolition of slavery. He also became a drunk and was thrown out of the Methodist Church for certain indiscretions in 1813. The Long Worm variety of his shillings is best recognized by the hedge running from N to I (as opposed to N to N for the short worm) and the decoration between ONE and SHILLING which contains no internal cross. It appears that the Long Worm shilling was struck after the Short Worms, which share a common obverse. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 595. NGC ID: 2AUT.
