1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 24-P, W-4965. Rarity-2. Curved Plow

1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 24-P, W-4965. Rarity-2. Curved Plow Beam, Narrow Shield. EF-40 (PCGS). CAC. This is a handsome New Jersey copper irrespective of die pairing, the surfaces free of troublesome flan flaws, no sizeable marks, and dressed in original sandy-brown patina with tinges of light chestnut. A loupe reveals a hint of microgranularity, to no detriment, and also of no concern are a few microscopic planchet fissures and some original texture here and there on the reverse. There are a few old, light marks over the lower part of the shield, invisible during in-hand viewing and not in any way troubling. Centering is good on the obverse, the reverse is off center to 8:30 with no denticulation from 6 to 11 o'clock. Although there are a number of exceptional coins known for this Maris number, the discerning collector would be hard pressed to do much better than the present example at the certified EF-40 grade level. Neat numismatic provenance, too! Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from Henry Chapman's sale of the Hon. George M. Parsons Collection, June 1914, lot 242; later, Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of February 2012, lot 3014. PCGS# 45424. NGC ID: AUKK. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
