oteworthy Maris 50-f New Jersey Head Left 1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 50-f, W-5475. Rarity-3. Head Left. EF-45 (PCGS). SHI DS3. Obverse die swell in right field, as usual for the variety and weakening the horse's mane, subsidiary break through the letters REA in CÆSAREA, but not yet extending to the plow handle. Reverse die perfect. Border denticulation frames the obverse from 1 o'clock to 8:30, but is off the flan at upper left, where we also note softness to the letters VA CÆ. The reverse is similarly off center to 8 o'clock, also similarly soft at lower left periphery. Some original planchet texture is retained in centers, where additional softness is noted, but the surfaces are hard and tight with hints of frost seen in the fields. The plow and date are the sharpest of the focal devices, but all design elements are discernible to bold. Nice chestnut and autumn-orange brown patina, a spot and light scale are at the upper left corner of the shield, reverse also with specks of verdigris here and there around periphery, there are no significant handling marks. This is a popular Maris number for type purposes, but with the quality offered here it is quite rare. The finest in our online archives is the PCGS EF-40 Parsons-Ryder-Boyd-Frontenac coin that most recently appeared in our November 2024 sale of the Ross Family Collection. The coin offered here does not appear in the 2024 Siboni-Howes-Ish Condition Census, perhaps excluded due to die state and other factors affecting the detail, but in our opinion it still deserves to be included in any discussion of the finest examples of Maris 50-f in numismatic hands.
