"1814" Major General Peter B. Porter Medal. Original Dies. Julian

"1814" Major General Peter B. Porter Medal. Original Dies. Julian MI-18. White Metal. Unc Details--Bent (PCGS). 64.5 mm. Brilliant light silver gray with deep reflectivity in the fields. Slight friction seen on the high points of both sides, especially light hairlines, scattered minor contact marks including a cloud of tiny nicks in the left reverse field and some scratches in the right reverse field. Quite nicely preserved for this composition, free of rim bruises and retaining a nice mirrored appearance. Collaring mark or "witness line" at precisely 12 o'clock, crisp early die state congruent to the earliest known strikings. A specimen of this medal in white metal in the Ford Collection sold for $3,600. At the time, the Ford cataloger noted a population of five specimens. A prize for Mint medal and War of 1812 aficionados. Provenance: From Paul Bosco's sale of November 2000, lot 645; our (Stack's) Americana Sale of January 2009, lot 5580.
