1846 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. JD-1, OC-P1. Rarity-7-. Top 30

Rarely Encountered Proof 1846 Dollar The Boyd-Pittman-Richmond Collection Specimen 1846 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. JD-1, OC-P1. Rarity-7-. Top 30 Variety. Repunched Date. Proof-64 (NGC). CAC. A striking example of this rarely offered issue in the early Proof Liberty Seated dollar series. Bathed in glossy olive-charcoal patina, the surfaces readily reveal more vivid undertones of cobalt blue, pale pink and reddish-rose iridescence as the coin rotates into direct lighting. The strike is impressively sharp overall, most features fully rendered and crisp, and the finish alternates between soft reflectivity in the fields and delicate frosting to the design elements. Close inspection with a loupe is required to discern a few trivial handling marks, leaving the in-hand appearance pleasingly smooth and highly attractive. In a subseries populated exclusively with leading numismatic rarities, the 1846 stands out as one of the most elusive Proof Liberty Seated dollars from the 1840s. John W. Dannreuther (United States Proof Coins, 2025 volume) allows for only nine or 10 survivors from an estimated mintage of 15 coins, a more limited estimate than he provides for the 1840, 1844, 1845, 1847 and 1848. Prior to this offering we had not handled a Proof 1846 for auction since 2008, which confirms that this issue is not only exceedingly rare in an absolute sense, but equally rare from a market availability standpoint. A fleeting opportunity, indeed, and one that deserves an aggressive bidding strategy. Provenance: Property from an Alabama Family. Earlier ex F.C.C. Boyd; Numismatic Gallery's sale of "World's Greatest Collection" (Boyd), Part I, January 1945, lot 135; Numismatic Gallery's Adolphe Menjou Catalogue, June 1950, lot 2091; John Jay Pittman; David W. Akers' sale of the John Jay Pittman Collection, Part II, May 1998, lot 1674; later, David Lawrence's sale of the Richmond Collection, Part III, November 2004, lot 1511; Heritage's sale of the Jack Lee Collection, III, November 2005 Dallas Signature Auction, lot 2234. NGC Census: 9; 0 finer. The corresponding PCGS Population is 2/3 in this category (Proof-66 finest). CAC Stickered Population: 2; 1. PCGS# 6987. NGC ID: 24ZW.
