1864 Pattern Liberty Seated Quarter. Judd-386, Pollock-454. Rarity-7-.

1864 Pattern Liberty Seated Quarter. Judd-386, Pollock-454. Rarity-7-. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 (PCGS). CAC. Obv: The Liberty Seated design used to strike regular issue 1864 quarters. Rev: The Motto design type adopted for regular issue Liberty Seated quarter production in 1866. A richly original, visually appealing Gem with the most vivid colors reserved for direct lighting angles. One of the so-called "transitional" patterns about which the uspatterns.com website notes the following: These and the other "with motto" patterns of this date and also 1863 and possibly 1865 are actually restrikes made circa 1869 and into the early 1870s and offered with restrikes of other denominations in complete sets. The reverse die used here is the same as on the 1869 and 1870 trial pieces with die rust between the eagle's right (observer's left) wing and the olive branch. The die state is later than on the 1869 pieces. Silver impressions, as here, have an extant population of only about a dozen specimen. Provenance: From Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of September 2009, lot 1392. PCGS Population: 2; 2 finer in this category (both Proof-66). CAC Stickered Population: 1; 0. PCGS# 60557. NGC ID: 29H9. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
