1869 Pattern Liberty Seated Dime. Judd-718, Pollock-799. Rarity-7+.

1869 Pattern Liberty Seated Dime. Judd-718, Pollock-799. Rarity-7+. Copper. Reeded Edge. Proof-66+ BN (PCGS). The obverse and revers designs are the same that the Mint used to coin regular issue 1869 Liberty Seated dimes. Vivid gold, salmon pink and pale gold iridescence backlights dominant copper-rose patina on both sides of this delightful upper end Gem. A traditional die trials striking, but now understood to be a deliberately struck Mint delicacy for sale to contemporary collectors, as part of off-metal Proof sets. Regardless, Judd-718 is a formidable rarity today with a mere three specimens traced per the uspatterns.com website. Provenance: Ex Superior's October 7-9, 1990 Sale, lot 1853, as PCGS Proof-65 RB; Ira & Larry Goldberg's Dr. Richard Ariagno Collection, May-June 1999, lot 572, as NGC Proof-66 RB; Superior's ANA National Money Show Auction of March 2000, lot 658, as NGC Proof-66 RB; our (Bowers and Merena's) Cabinet of Lucien M.
