Exceedingly Rare Judd-881 Pattern Quarter in Aluminum Finest of Just Two or Three Known 1870 Pattern Quarter Dollar. Judd-881, Pollock-979. Rarity-8. Aluminum. Plain Edge. Proof-66 Cameo (PCGS). CAC. Obv: Standard Silver design with a stylized Liberty Seated portrait to left with liberty pole and cap behind. Liberty is holding an olive branch in her left hand, and her right hand supports a shield over which a scroll inscribed LIBERTY is draped. There are 13 stars around the border, and the date 1870 is below. Rev: The denomination 25 CENTS is within a wreath of cotton and corn with the word STANDARD above. This glowing Gem Cameo Proof exhibits untoned platinum-white surfaces that allow full appreciation of bold field to device contrast. Strike detail is razor sharp throughout, the surfaces silky smooth in texture with awesome eye appeal. The awesome rarity of this Judd number complements the technical quality and eye appeal of the present example. This is one of only two or three coins known for Judd-881, per the uspatterns.com website, with Saul Teichman's census work published therein positively identifying only two specimens. Offred here is the CC#1 coin; the CC#2 coin has apparently not been seen since our (Stack's) sale of May 1975.
