1871 Pattern Liberty Seated Dime. Judd-1089, Pollock-1225. Rarity-8+.

1871 Pattern Liberty Seated Dime. Judd-1089, Pollock-1225. Rarity-8+. Nickel. Reeded Edge. Proof-64 Cameo (PCGS). CAC. The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to produced regular issue 1871 Liberty Seated dimes. Judd-1089 is one of the off-metal dime strikes of the year, also made in sipper (Judd-1087) and aluminum (Judd-1088). All of these were deliberately made for sale to contemporary collectors as part of off-metal Proof sets, rather than being "regular dies trial strikes" per traditional numismatic wisdom. The nickel strike is the rarest of these, the present example unique per Saul Teichman's census research published at the uspatterns.com website. It is a lightly and attractively toned specimen dressed in golden-apricot iridescence. Tiny planchet voids are scattered across both sides, and mentioned for accuracy. Highly significant! Provenance: Ex William H. Woodin, exhibited at the 1914 ANS; Waldo C. Newcomer; B. Max Mehl's sale of the William Forrester Dunham Collection, June 1941, lot 1787; King Farouk of Egypt; Sotheby's sale of The Palace Collections of Egypt, 1954, lot 1880; Kreisberg-Schulman's sale of February 1960, lot 2362; Superior's May 30-June 1, 1993 Auction, lot 1266, as NGC Proof-64; Superior's Pre-Long Beach Sale of September 2002, lot 1561, as NGC Proof-64; Bob R.
