1872 Liberty Head Eagle. JD-1. Rarity-7-. Proof-61 (NGC).

Rare 1872 Proof Liberty Eagle 1872 Liberty Head Eagle. JD-1. Rarity-7-. Proof-61 (NGC). Our first offering for a Proof Liberty Head eagle of this date since 2011, and an attractive coin for the assigned grade. Both sides are drenched in richly original color with honey-olive undertones supporting more vivid orange-rose. Scattered marks, wispy hairlines and some associated haziness to the appearance explain the numeric grade assigned by NGC, but the Proof qualities are readily evident as the coin rotates under lighting. These include appreciable mirrored qualities in the fields and fully struck, softly frosted design elements. There are no sizeable or otherwise singularly distracting blemishes. The extreme rarity of this issue is a well-established fact among numismatic scholars. The Proof 1872 eagle entered the annals of numismatic history with a mintage of just 30 coins. A small number of these coins were probably melted in the Mint as unsold, while additional examples undoubtedly found their way into circulation when contemporary collectors either lost the desire or the means to retain the coins as numismatic keepsakes. John W. Dannreuther (2018) suspects that only 10 to 12 specimens have survived into the 21st century, a number that includes three examples impounded in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the American Numismatic Society. The number of coins available for private ownership, therefore, is probably not greater than 10 pieces. And to the already impressive rarity of this Proof issue must be added the low mintage, key date status of the circulation strike 1872 eagle - a Philadelphia Mint issue with a mere 1,620 pieces produced and a poor rate of survival in all grades.
