Gem Cameo Proof 1881 Judd-1673 Five-Cents Pattern Liberty Head Design 1881 Pattern Liberty Head Nickel. Judd-1673, Pollock-1874. Rarity-7-. Aluminum. Reeded Edge. Proof-66 Cameo (PCGS). CAC. Obv: Similar to that of the regular issue Liberty Head nickel introduced in 1883, except the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border in place of 13 stars and the date, of course, is 1881. Rev: A Roman numeral V for the denomination is set within a wreath of corn, wheat, and cotton. Bright silver gray mirrors support frosted design motifs in a heavily contrasting manner, with a nuance of pale champagne adding greatly to the overall appeal. A simply gorgeous coin for the assigned grade, one with strong physical character and equally strong eye appeal. Slightly more than half a dozen examples of this Judd number are known, this being one of the finest. Provenance: Ex our (American Numismatic Rarities') Red Bank Collection sale, December 2003, lot 275, as PCGS Proof-64; Bob R. Simpson; Heritage's sale of the Bob R. Simpson Collection, February 2021 Signature Auction, lot 3305. PCGS Population: just 1 in all grades in the CAM category. CAC Stickered Population: 1; 0. PCGS# 534936. NGC ID: 2AJY.
