18th Century - Captive Christ - Mexican Viceregal Colonial School, New Spain

Descriptio Oil on canvas attached to a panel. Christ, wearing a crown of thorns and a rope around his torso, is shown seated on a rock in an attitude of deep contemplation. The figure is silhouetted against a dark background with draperies framing the scene, highlighting the realistic and dramatic anatomy. His body, illuminated from the left, reveals careful execution of light and shadow, emphasizing muscular tension and an expression of resignation. The palette is sober, dominated by ochres, earth tones, and whites, with a workmanship that highlights glazes and transparencies typical of the Baroque. A devotional work, framed within the iconography of Ecce Homo or the Man of Sorrows, it depicts redemptive suffering with remarkable emotional intensity and expressive restraint. 80 × 59 cm.
