1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition Gold Dollar. MS-67 * (NGC). CAC.

Beautiful Panama-Pacific Commemorative Gold Dollar From an Original Set Sold by Farran Zerbe in 1915 Later Handled by B. Max Mehl 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition Gold Dollar. MS-67 * (NGC). CAC. An incredible survivor from this coveted issue, displaying iridescent pinkish-rose highlights to dominant color in deep, warm golden-apricot. Sharply struck with universal satin luster and freedom from grade-limiting blemishes. This piece is one of the very finest examples of the type endorsed by CAC. The Congressional Act of January 16, 1915, called for the production of special half dollars, gold dollars, quarter eagles and $50 gold pieces to commemorate the historic Panama-Pacific Exposition. The Act specified the maximum number of examples of each denomination to be struck, including 25,000 pieces for the gold dollar. Due to its proximity to the Expo, the San Francisco Mint produced all of the commemoratives, including the authorized 25,000 gold dollars, plus an additional 34 coins for assay purposes. Sales to the public both at the Exposition and through other venues proved somewhat disappointing, however, and in due course 10,000 examples were returned to the Mint and melted, leaving a net distribution of 15,000 pieces. Most examples remain in Mint State, but very few are left in Superb Gem. The present example is one of the most exceptional specimens extant and simply cannot be improved upon. This gold dollar is from an original five-piece set of Panama-Pacific Exposition commemorative silver and gold coins sold by Farran Zerbe on July 29, 1915. The buyer at that time was a Robert O. Fleming(?) of Oswego, Kansas, who ordered the coins from Zerbe on June 24, 1915, and acquired them in an original case. This set's next documented sale was on June 8, 1940, when it was sold by renowned Fort Worth, Texas coin dealer B. Max Mehl to a Mr. W.C. Mullendore of Los Angeles, California. By that time the original box had apparently been lost and was replaced by an original Shreve & Co. copper frame. While we have seen copies of the two sales receipts confirming these early sales for this set, neither is included with this lot. The original box and frame are also not included. The remaining four coins in this original set are also being offered in this sale, each individually. Provenance: Property from an Alabama Family. Earlier ex Farran Zerbe, July 29, 1915; Robert O. Fleming(?), Oswego, Kansas; B. Mex Mehl, June 8, 1940; Mr. W.C. Mullendore, Los Angeles, California. CAC Stickered Population: 26; 0. PCGS# 7449. NGC ID: BYLH.
