1965 Ferrari 275 GTS

1965 Ferrari 275 GTS

Introduced at the Paris Motor Show in October 1964, the Ferrari 275 was the replacement for the long-running 250 series. The new model featured a 3.3-liter tipo 213 V-12 engine which produced 20 more horsepower than the outgoing threeliter. Power was sent to the rear wheels through a rear-mounted, five-speed transaxle, giving the car a near-50/50 weight distribution. The 275 was offered in both berlinetta and spider body styles, and much like the earlier 250 SWB Berlinetta and California Spider, the two designs differed greatly but shared the same mechanical underpinnings. Just 200 examples of the Pininfarina-bodied 275 GTS spider were built through early 1966, making the model considerably rarer than its berlinetta counterpart – of which 450 were built. Completed in April 1965 and finished in Rosso Cina (China Red, Italver 20456 S) over beige Connolly leather upholstery, chassis 07057 was the 35th example built and was destined for the American market. Therefore, the GTS was equipped with instruments in miles, according to research compiled by historian Marcel Massini. The 275 was sold new via US Ferrari distributor Luigi Chinetti in New York, though the identity of its first owner remains unknown. By 1979, the Ferrari was acquired by Charlie Kemp of Jackson, Mississippi. Kemp was a renowned race car driver, piloting a variety of machinery including a Shelby GT 350 R and Porsche 917/10 throughout the 1970s. During his racing career, Kemp also operated Ferrari South, a car dealership in Jackson which specialized in Ferrari competition and road-going cars. Highlights of Kemp’s showroom included a 365 P “Tre Posti,” 250 SWB Berlinetta, 275 GTB/4, and multiple 275 GTS examples, including this car. Kemp sold the Ferrari to a Louisiana resident who registered it on the Louisiana plate “574B004,” which accompanies the sale. In late 1979, the GTS was reacquired by Kemp, who later sold the car to Richard Watkins of Richmond, Virginia. Watkins’ father, Fred, owned Curles Neck Dairy, one of the largest dairy suppliers in the US at the time. During Watkins’ brief ownership, he acquired a replacement nose panel, engine lid, grille, grille surround, and front bumper for the car from FAF Motorcars in Georgia, planning to repair the car’s nose which appeared to be poorly repaired following a previous front end collision. Watkins never began restoring the open Ferrari, and in 1980 it was acquired by Barbour Byrd Wilson of Hudson, Wisconsin. Barbour Byrd Wilson was a lifelong car enthusiast who developed a strong interest in Ferraris while working for photographic film manufacturer Ferrania of Liguria, Italy, in the 1970s. At one time, his collection included this 275 GTS, a 250 Ellena, two 250 GTEs, and a Maserati Mistral Spider and Coupe. During Wilson’s ownership, the Ferrari was stored in a barn at his Wisconsin home for over a quarter of a century. The current owner acquired the 275 GTS from Mr. Wilson in 2006, and has carefully gathered additional factory parts necessary for the car’s restoration in the intervening two decades. Never fully restored, 07057 still retains its matching-numbers 3.3-liter Colombo V-12 engine and a period Becker Europa TR radio. Included in the sale are a report by Ferrari historian Marcel Massini, which confirms the original Pininfarina body number (175035), books, a partial tool kit, and spare parts. An ideal candidate for a concours restoration, this Ferrari is surely among the last unrestored examples of its type to be found. Never before offered at auction and unknown to the Ferrari world for decades, this car represents a fresh, exciting opportunity to acquire a truly distinctive 275 GTS. Please note that this vehicle has been in long-term static storage and may not be currently operational. It will require mechanical attention prior to use. car
