About Mouton Rothschild 1988 An exceptional First Growth (Premier Cru Classé) from the Pauillac appellation. This vintage features an artistic label designed by the renowned American painter Keith Haring, who created a vibrant, stylized depiction of two dancing rams (Le bélier—the symbol of Mouton) outlined in his signature pop-art style Vintage: The harvest ran from September 28 to October 14 under favorable, sunny conditions. 1988 is highly regarded as a classic, old-school connoisseur’s vintage. While it initially lacked the flamboyant ripeness of 1989 or the opulence of 1990, its high acidity and dense tannic backbone gave it magnificent, decades-long cellular staying power. Vinification & aging: Hand-harvested grapes underwent full destemming before being gravity-fed into Mouton's traditional large oak vats. Maceration and fermentation were mapped parcel by parcel to maximize terroir expression. The wine was aged for approximately 20 months in 100% brand-new French oak barrels. Regular rackings and traditional fining with fresh egg whites were utilized to clarify the wine before estate bottling. Blend: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon - 13% Merlot - 10% Cabernet Franc - 2% Petit Verdot Tasting Notes: At nearly four decades old, the 1988 Mouton Rothschild has shed its tough baby armor, revealing a highly sophisticated, savory, and multi-layered profile. Appearance: Deep red-garnet with an elegant coppery-brick tint on the rim showing its extensive age. Nose: Intensely complex and open. It bursts with signature Mouton markers: pipe tobacco, cedar wood, wet flint stones, mint, and leather, layered over dried blackcurrants, Valrhona dark chocolate, and a hint of espresso beans. Palate: Medium to full-bodied with a firmly structured, dry, and aristocratic mouthfeel. The tannins are mostly resolved but retain a classic, savory grip. It balances fresh acidity with complex flavors of dark plums, kirsch, forest floor, and cigar wrapper. Finish: Long, smooth, and elegantly dry, closing with lingering echoes of roasted coffee and mint Critics Score 93 Points James Suckling (2015) There's licorice here along with mint, some lead pencil and flowers. It's full and round displaying wonderful vanilla and plum flavors. Very silky and refined yet dense and caressing. A beauty, though it does turn a little dry, always revealing its wood. 18.5/20 Points Jancis Robinson (2014) Nuanced ruby color. Dense, spicy, exotic nose with definite ingredient X. Not rich but very pure and very Mouton with its grace notes of warm flint stones. Long and nuanced. Really appetizing and aristocratic. Shipping is from EU MAINLAND in certified protective cardbox.
