Presenting a nice bottle of 1997 LRA 904 that is almost MINT with an excellent neck fill level. Drinking perfectly now for celebrating 30 years over Christmas maybe (?) but also plenty of aging potential still. Bottle has been kept in a wine fridge. La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 is an iconic, traditionally crafted Rioja wine produced only in high-quality years. It is celebrated for its incredible longevity, complexity, and meticulous aging regime. Blend: 90% Tempranillo (sourced from Briñas, Labastida, and Villalba) and 10% Graciano (sourced from Melchorón I and II, Briones, and Rodezno). Winemaking: Alcoholic fermentation lasted 12 days, followed by a natural malolactic fermentation over 35 days in stainless steel vats. Aging: Transferred to the winery's signature American oak casks in March 1998, where it was aged for 4 full years and underwent traditional manual rackings by candlelight every 6 months to remove sediment naturally. It was bottled in April 2002. 96 Points Vinous (tasted in 2024) The 1997 Gran Reserva 904 is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from Rioja Alta. Aged for four years in American oak barrels, this tertiary red wine presents herbal and vermouth-like notes, accompanied by aromas of cacao and tobacco, with a hint of leather. Dry and silky, the delicate and nimble flow lingers long, emphasizing the bouquet aromas—a beautiful old-fashioned Rioja at its peak. The evolution of Rioja's tannins from chalky to silky is a key factor of the region's terroir, showcased elegantly in this Gran Reserva.
