East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A carved wood architectural transom (ranma) rendered in openwork with an eagle poised among the gnarled branches of a windswept pine. Using traditional Japanese carpentry techniques - secured at the corners without nails through interlocking joinery. Crafted using traditional Japanese carpentry techniques, it is secured at the corners without nails through interlocking joinery, and carved and finished on both sides to be admired from multiple viewpoints within a refined interior setting.
