2-panel folding screen with flowers - Lacquered wood

A striking two-panel lacquer folding screen 屏風 (byôbu), decorated with seasonal flowers and foliage arranged along sweeping, ribbon-like bands against a glossy black ground. The bands curve across the upper left corner and sweep upwards from the lower edge towards the right, leaving a generous expanse of black at the centre. Subtle shading lends the overlapping bands a folded appearance. Long, pointed horizontal streaks in gold and silver tones extend behind them, reminiscent of stylized water ripples. The decoration includes chrysanthemums 菊 (kiku), cherry blossoms 桜 (sakura), plum blossoms 梅 (ume), autumn maple leaves 紅葉 (momiji), peonies 牡丹 (botan), bush clover 萩 (hagi) and bellflowers 桔梗 (kikyô). Warm gold and orange-red tones are complemented by white lusterous mother-of-pearl inlay 螺鈿 (raden), used for selected blossoms, leaves and flower centres. A narrow gold line borders the composition, enclosed by bevelled black lacquer edges. The reverse is finished in plain black lacquer. Signed in the lower left corner. Period: Japan – Taishô period to early Shôwa period (early 20th century). Dimensions: Height 146 cm, Total width 140 cm (2 x 70 cm). Weight: 25.8 kg.
