2023 Domaine Coste-Ubesse « Moja Negra » - Languedoc - 6 Bottles (0.75L)

6 bottles from the Coste-Ubesse estate MOJA NEGRA 2023 in Pic Saint Loup. The Coste-Ubesse wine comes from two neighboring Syrah plots totaling barely 3 hectares and farmed organically. This parcel located in the commune of Saint-Mathieu de Tréviers in Hérault sits on a hillside of clay-limestone scree on fissured marls oriented to the north (Ubesse = Ubac, meaning north in Occitan). “My grandfather Eugène, strolling through his vines, taught me to observe the cicadas, like mated to the bark of a strawberry-tree, holm oak, or a large Aleppo pine. The cades, cistes, rosemary, and the scrubby shrubs of the garrigue are here the companions of the vines. They push their roots beyond the limestone pebbles into the soft clay of Coste-Ubesse, the north-facing slope. This orientation tempers the deadly ardor of the summer sun, the terroir shelters plants from sudden winter assaults. Everything here favors the quiet growth to full ripeness of the grapes that make my wines.” “According to my research, the Reboul family were winemakers from father to son without interruption since 1700 (I could not go further back…). A sign of fate, they were at the time owners in Saint-Pargoire, the commune where we bought a few hectares of vines with Jean-Luc to complete the Coste-Ubesse estate at Pic Saint Loup… “A cuvée 100% Syrah Grenache with intoxicating perfumes of licorice and vanilla, long on the palate, which aged two years in barriques before bottling.” Magnificent.
