Most minerals and stones in the world derive their names from the mineralogist who discovered them, from the locality where they were first found, or as a reminder of a color. There are several hypotheses about the origin of the word "Quartz." The first would be that it derives from the word "quaterz," meaning "bad ore," invented in the 1600s. The second hypothesis suggests that smoked quartz derives from the German word "qewärz," which means "growth," in reference to the shape of the crystals. Smoked quartz, formerly "enfumé," takes its name from its brownish color, linked to natural irradiation. There are two particular varieties of smoked quartz, morion quartz, whose natural irradiation is particularly pronounced, and Cairngorm, discovered in the Cairngorm mountains of the same name in Scotland, yellow to brown.
