3.33 kg Bamboo Stone Skull – Lifesize

Irish Tales tell of a man who was called only the stingy Jack. He outwitted the devil twice. Once he had him turn himself into a coin and tucked it beside a silver cross. Another time he lured him onto a tree and carved a cross into the bark. When Jack died, God denied him heaven, and the offended devil would not let him into hell. He sent him into the dark night, with nothing but a glowing piece of coal. Jack placed the embers in a hollowed turnip and has wandered the earth with it ever since. The Irish called him Jack o’ the Lantern. In Ireland and Scotland men carved grotesque faces into turnips and set them in windows and doors to keep him and other wandering spirits at bay. Thus the Jack O’Lantern was born. This life-size skull still carries that glow within it. Orange splinters sit everywhere like coal fragments in gray ash. They do not lie flat in the stone but stand out perceptibly, so that the hand can feel each fragment. Between them flow dark brown veins, so smooth and sleekly polished that they remind one of old ivory. The rough, gray rock beneath encases it all, alive and untamed, making even the dark tones glow. At 3.33 kilograms, this skull is not a pocket talisman but a guardian for the night when the boundary between worlds is thinnest. Its rock is older than any legend. Stones of this kind formed mainly in the Cambrian and Ordovician, about half a billion years ago. Then, thin calcite-silt layers on the seafloor quickly harden into crusts. Storms tore them into shallow plates, churned them up, and laid them down anew. In China such rock is called 竹叶状灰岩, bamboo-leaf‑shaped limestone, after the shape of the embedded splinters. After the Ordovician it nearly vanished from Earth’s history. One explanation is that burrowing marine creatures thorough uprooted the seabed so that such crusts could no longer form. The orange portions owe their color presumably to iron-bearing carbonates and iron oxides. Because the components have different hardness, they yielded to polishing to varying degrees, creating the tangible relief. Material: Flat-Pebble-Konglomerat (bamboo-leaf limestone, chin. 竹叶状灰岩) – carbonate sedimentary rock with flat, orange‑fringed rock fragments; trade name “Bamboo Stone” Origin: China Dimensions: 17.0 x 11.0 x 13.0 cm (life-size) Weight: 3.33 kg Special features: Orange fragments with tangible, slightly raised relief; smoothly polished, ivory-like dark brown bands; rough gray base matter as contrast; fine natural hairline and sedimentary fractures at multiple locations, including the forehead, nasal bridge, zygomatic arch, and jaw
