Near East, Southern Levant, Holy Land, Roman to Byzantine period. A group of seven terracotta oil lamps, each a squat discoid reservoir drawn to a short nozzle, the buff to pale ochre fabric powdered with earthen encrustation and pale burial salts. Several shoulders carry traces of mold-made relief, worn ridging and faint floral or figural motifs, with concentric rings framing the filling and wick holes. Two examples rise to a small pointed lug handle at the rear, and one bears a planta pedis stamp, a footprint-shaped cartouche whose letters have abraded past reading, likely a maker's mark in Latin or Greek. Burning left only light traces at the nozzles. Lamps of this class lit domestic rooms, shops, and tombs throughout the Levant, made in local workshops by the thousand and carried into daily life at every social level. The planta pedis, a stamp cut in the outline of a human foot, was borrowed by lampmakers and potters from the wider Roman workshop repertoire, where it enclosed the maker's name on terra sigillata and on mold-made lamps alike. On lamp bases it identified the workshop that owned the mold, and where such names survive legibly they have allowed scholars to map distribution networks running from Italian and North African production centers out to the eastern provinces. Worn or partially struck examples like this one are common, since the stamp sat on the underside and abraded through use and burial. Lamps of this squat discoid class persisted with little change from the later Roman centuries into the Byzantine period in Palestine and Transjordan, produced in local workshops in enormous numbers. Their ubiquity in tombs is not necessarily a sign of ritual manufacture: an ordinary household lamp was simply the object most naturally placed beside the dead to light the way. Item # 204572
