When light hits the surface, a golden, silky shimmer travels across the mineral – similar to the pupil of a big cat. This effect arose through a fascinating pseudomorphosis: originally parallel-grown crocidolite fibers (a hornblende-asbestos type) were over millions of years replaced by crystal-clear quartz (silica). The fine fibrous structure remained perfectly preserved. Embedded iron hydroxide (limonite) gives the stone its world-famous honey-yellow to gold-brown coloring.
