A Chinese Cizhou white glazed tripod water pot, Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368)

A Chinese Cizhou white glazed tripod water pot Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) covered with slip under a clear glaze suffused with crazing 8cm wide x 4.8cm high Provenance: Collection of Wilfred Stuart Delano Barnes (1934-2024) and by family descent, collection no. 140 Stuart worked for Jardine Matheson in Hong Kong from 1962, serving for many years as Group Financial Controller and ultimately as Financial Director. The present lot features an inverted rim, a globular body, and is supported by three small feet. The body is thinly potted and applied overall with a white glaze, which shows a subtle, faint greenish tinge where it pools. This type of thinly potted, plain white ceramic with a faint greenish-grey hue may well represent the very type of Cizhou ware described in Wang Zuo's expanded edition of the Xinzeng Gegu Yaolun ('The Essential Criteria of Antiquities'), which notes that 'the plain ones [from Cizhou] are fetched at higher prices than Ding ware.' Renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship, often praised as 'white as jade and thin as paper,' the Ding kilns achieved great acclaim during the Song and Jin dynasties, inspiring numerous kilns across northern China to emulate their style. By the Yuan dynasty, although the central production area of Ding ware was in decline, its classic white porcelain manufacturing techniques and aesthetic ideals were absorbed and perpetuated by prominent neighboring kilns, such as those of Cizhou. Compare a very similar white-glazed tripod water pot in imitation of Ding ware currently in the Palace Museum, Beijing (museum accession no. Gu 00145904). Condition Report: minor wear to the surface and the rim with one area of firing blemish Condition Report Disclaimer, A Chinese Cizhou white glazed tripod water pot, A Chinese Cizhou white glazed tripod water pot Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) covered with slip under a clear glaze suffused with crazing 8cm wide x 4.8cm high Provenance: Collection of Wilfred Stuart Delano Barnes (1934-2024) and by family descent, collection no. 140 Stuart worked for Jardine Matheson in Hong Kong from 1962, serving for many years as Group Financial Controller and ultimately as Financial Director.
