A fine Second World War 1941 ‘immediate’ D.F.M. group of four awarded to Sergeant B. Capel, Royal Air Force, a Blenheim air gunner who flew during the Battle of Britain as part of 23 Squadron, with ‘Ace’ pilots such as P. S. B. Ensor D.F.C. and R. M. B. “The Dook” Duke-Woolley D.S.O., D.F.C. and Bar. After the Battle, Capel transferred to 7 Squadron, Bomber Command and went on to distinguish himself as a Sterling Rear Gunner flying with R. W. Cox, D.S.O., D.F.C., A.F.C. as his pilot. Capel flew in at least 24 operational sorties with the Squadron, including an attack on the Prinz Eugen at Brest Docks, 7 June 1941, and an ‘edge of the seat’ attack on the Scharnhorst at La Pallice, 23 July 1941. During the latter sortie, not only did Cox’s crew manage to get a direct hit on the German battleship, but Capel’s shooting also helped repel an attack by 6 enemy aircraft - personally shooting down 2 Me. 109’s in the process Distinguished Flying Medal, G.VI.R. (902479 Sgt. B. Capel. R.A.F.); 1939-45 Star, 1 copy clasp, Battle of Britain; Air Crew Europe Star; War Medal 1939-45, mounted for display, generally good very fine (4) £2,000-£3,000.
