A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SERPENTINE FRONTED CHEST OF DRAWERS, CIRCA 1780

A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SERPENTINE FRONTED CHEST OF DRAWERS PROBABLY BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, CIRCA 1780 75.5cm high, 88.5cm wide, 51.5cm deep For a closely related chest of drawers see Sotheby's New York, Important Americana: Property from the Collection of William E. and Anne H. Lewis, 26th January 2020, lot 1700 ($7,500 incl. BP) Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, old splits and chips commensurate with age and use. Generally good colour, original surface and patina, with some fading as expected for age and use. There are some additional abrasions and scratches, including some deep scratches and some concentrated areas of scratching, particularly to the top (see additional images available via email). Some areas of dripped varnish or stain to the left side of the drawer fronts (not visible on catalogue image) this could fairly easily and sympathetically be removed by a restorer whilst maintaining/ restoring colour to chest. Some old losses including a fragments of various size to feet(see images) . The feet are original The handles are possibly replacements The elements of the 'screw' fitting coming through the drawer fronts are quite long. The crew fittings and bolts securing the handles could have been replaced. The handles and escutcheons might possibly be interpreted to be too large for this chest, they do overhang the lower edge fo the top drawer slightly. The lock to the top drawer is lacking, the remainder are steel. They appear original, some screws lacking, some replaced. Lacking keys Some areas to drawer linings are loose, so need simple re-attachment/ securing. some joins or splits to drawer linings have been crudely secured with modern tape. The sides are intact without splits (unusual for the period/construction). Feet appear original. Some additional blocks to underside and under one foot (probably to assist levelling on an uneven floor. ) A pleasing chest of drawers in its size, shape and originality int he main, simple restoration would bring it back to its potential Please refer to all additional images available via email, they are a vital part of this condition report Condition Report Disclaimer, A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SERPENTINE FRONTED CHEST OF DRAWERS, A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SERPENTINE FRONTED CHEST OF DRAWERS PROBABLY BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, CIRCA 1780 75.5cm high, 88.5cm wide, 51.5cm deep For a closely related chest of drawers see Sotheby's New York, Important Americana: Property from the Collection of William E. and Anne H.
