A LATE 19TH CENTURY OAK CASED WEATHER STATION BY J. HICKS, LONDON consisting of a central barograph over a mercury thermometer, flanked by a timepiece and barometer, both with signed silvered dials, inscribed John Hicks, 8, 9 & 10 Hatton Garden, London, all housed within a moulded edge case with glazed fall-front panel 42 x 64 x 18 cm Provenance: From the Collection of the Late Antique Dealer and Horologist Jane Read (1935-2024) From an early age Jane was interested in how things worked, a trait passed down from her father who was an engineering rear admiral in the Royal Navy. She was practically minded and particularly drawn to clocks. For 25 years she had an antiques shop on Bermondsey Market which specialised in clocks and watches, and also ran Old Manor House antiques in the village of Brasted, Kent which at one point had 19 antiques shops, allowing dealers to share their expertise (and spare parts!). Jane was a well read and self-taught horologist who was also a charming, pretty and shrewd negotiator. She was well respected in the trade.
