This is an exceptional and museum-grade lot of 21 prepared butterflies from the renowned collection of Vestergaard — a collector who was active on four continents between 1973 and 2001. The lot is unique due to the combination of origin, documentation, and rarity. Not merchandise, but a scientifically documented collection with original field labels, legacies and determinations. Many specimens come from hard-to-reach areas and expeditions that are no longer possible today. Provenance: World collection. The lot covers 9 countries: China (Guangxi & Sichuan), Cameroon, Philippines, Trinidad, Peru, Mexico, Belize, Suriname and Russia (Primorsky Krai). The oldest specimen is from Trinidad in 1973, the most recent from Cameroon in 2001. Why this lot is extremely rare. 1. Complete provenance Vestergaard: All specimens with original handwritten / printed label with date, location, altitude and leg. 2. Museum-quality with Chinese expedition material: 8 specimens from Jinxiu, Dayao Shan, Guangxi and Emei Shan, Sichuan — collected by Wu and Liang et al. in 1997-1998 at 1600 m elevation!!! Material from this period hardly ever enters the market. 3. Highlight - Eryphanis polyxena polyxena: The large purple emperor in the middle is the absolute centerpiece. Individual description - from left to right, top to bottom: Row 1 top: 1. Euploea snelleni snelleni male - Philippines - Label: d'Abrera ssp. snelleni in EAST MINDANAO. Very rare crow butterfly, endemic to the Philippines. Almost never offered in Europe. 2. Bebearia sp. - Cameroon, Yaounde, 10-7-1973, leg. Vestergaard - Classic Vestergaard material from the 1970s from Central Africa. 3. Colias sp. - Peru, La Lucma, Dept. Cajamarca, 2400m, N-Peru, 1999 - High-Andean yellow-white butterfly from the Andes at 2400m. Extremely rare locality!! 4. Aporia agathon - China, W. Sichuan, Kangding, Paoma-Shan, VIII.1998 leg. Wan. Great white-striped Pieridae from West China. Beautifully patterned. 5. Mimathyma schrenckii / Apatura - China, Yunnan, Hei Mt, Lanchang, 2300m, VIII.1999 leg. Zhi. Blue emperor’s mantle with intense iridescent blue sheen. High-altitude species at 2300m. Highly sought after. Row 2: 6. Pseudochazara / Chazara sp. - China, W. Sichuan, Emei Shan, 1600m, VII.1997 leg. Wu - Satyridae from the sacred mountain Emei. 7. Ptychandra negrosensis Banks, Holloway & Barlow, 1976 - Philippines - Top rarity. Label: Ptychandra Felder, 1861 / Ptychandra negrosensis (holotype: depicted male in d'Abrera). Specimen with determination as the rare negrosensis, endemic to Negros. The blue iridescence is spectacular. A determinations piece for specialists !!! 8. Euploea midamus? - China, Guangxi, Jinxiu, Dayao Shan, VII-VIII.1998 leg. Liang et al. Black butterfly with white mirrors. From the famous Dayao Shan expedition. 9. Neope sp. - China, W. Sichuan, Emei Shan, 1600m, VII.1997 leg. Wu. Elegant Nymphalidae with white bands. 10. Anartia / Chlosyne sp. - Trinidad, F.A. Valley, 8-8-1973 leg. Vestergaard. Early Vestergaard material from the Caribbean. Historically 50+ years old. Row 3: 11. Zerene cesonia - Mexico, Sonora province, Ures, Rio Sonora, 18.8.1984 leg. Klein. Beautiful lemon-yellow with black-edged Pieridae male. Virtually undiscovered in northern Mexico!! 12. Symbrenthia / Athyma sp. - China, Guangxi, Jinxiu, Dayao Shan, VII-VIII.1998 leg. Liang et al. Orange-black striped small Nymphalidae. 13. Eryphanis polyxena polyxena - SURINAME, Lelydorp, District PARA, Feb/Mar 2000 ABSOLUTE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS LOT!!!!! Huge owl butterfly with deep iridescent purple-violet. Wingspan > 13 cm. Very rare in this perfect quality and with exact data. A museum piece that dominates the lot!!!! 14. Anartia fatima / Anartia sp. Mexico, Garden by Hotel Santa Helena, Palenque, Chiapas, 15.III.1991 With red spots, from the jungle near Palenque. 15. Cymothoe caenis / Cymothoe egesta. Cameroon, East Bout M'Balmayo, June 2001 Large yellow-black hover butterfly from Central Africa. Perfect specimen. Row 4 bottom: 16.
