A Pair of Chinese Famille Verte Hexagonal Vases, 19th Century Of baluster form and decorated with a processional of figures. Dimensions: 20 in. high Provenance: Purchased in China in 1912 by Brigadier-General Offley Bohun Stovin Fairless Shore (1863–1922) and his wife Mrs. Caroline (Lina) Perry (nee' Sinnickson) Shore (1870-1957); Thence by Descent; Property of a Philadelphia Family. Caroline (Lina) Shore was from a wealthy Philadelphia family. In 1907, she married Offley Shore, an Englishman and army officer whose ancestral home, Norton Hall in Sheffield, was sold out of the family in 1925. The couple lived in India until 1917, and in 1919 moved to the United States. Their stay, however, was short-lived, and they were in Scotland in 1922 when Offley passed away. Lina lived in Grosvenor Square, London from the late 1920s until she was installed in a "grace and favour" apartment at Hampton Court Palace in Richmond. Shore was the last tenant of the Clock Tower Apartment, housed under the cupola designed by Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723). Long neglected and in disrepair, Shore made a number of interesting discoveries from the palace's earliest Tudor times. This lot, along with several others in this sale, were part of Shore's interiors at the time of her tenancy. Condition In good overall condition. Minor scattered rubbing and wear to decoration. One of the vases with tight hairlines to the base.
