A pair of Chinese Longquan celadon glazed dishes, Southern Song Dynasty

A pair of Chinese Longquan celadon glazed dishes Southern Song Dynasty, 12th century finely potted with a shallow rounded body and foliate rim, covered overall in a lustrous celadon glaze stopping on the foot rim, the base impressed with a four-character mark He Bin Yi Fan ('Exemplary Model from the Riverside') 16cm diameter Provenance: A Private UK Collection Dishes of this type belong to a well-established group of foliate-rimmed Longquan celadon wares produced during the Southern Song Dynasty, a time when kiln production reached its technical and aesthetic peak. The refined silhouette, rich glaze quality, and understated inscription together exemplify the cultivated restraint and material sophistication that define the finest Longquan ceramics. The inscription '河濱遺范' is generally interpreted as an allusion to the ancient narrative of pottery-making by the Yellow River banks, symbolising exemplary craftsmanship. Compare with a very similar bowl with five-lobed foliate rim and the same impressed mark, published in Zhu Boqian (ed.), Longquan Kiln Celadon, Taipei: Art Media Resources Publishing, 1998, p. 126, fig. 91. Also see another Longquan celadon bowl with five-lobed foliate rim, with Gengxu year in ink writing and impressed 'He Bin Yi Fan' mark, Excavated from a Southern Song tomb in Jixi County, Anhui Province, China, published in Zhejiang Provincial Museum, A Flowing Green Age: Illustrated Catalogue of Dated Ceramics Excavated in Zhejiang Province, Beijing: Cultural Relics Publishing House, 2017, p. 264. Also see a very similar dish in the Palace Museum, Beijing, accession number 故00143047. Condition Report: both with chipped rims and wear to the glaze one bowl with glaze cracks or crasing on the interior visible under the UV light but not going through the body the other bowl with the rim chipped and associated crack Condition Report Disclaimer, A pair of Chinese Longquan celadon glazed dishes, A pair of Chinese Longquan celadon glazed dishes Southern Song Dynasty, 12th century finely potted with a shallow rounded body and foliate rim, covered overall in a lustrous celadon glaze stopping on the foot rim, the base impressed with a four-character mark He Bin Yi Fan ('Exemplary Model from the Riverside') 16cm diameter Provenance: A Private UK Collection Dishes of this type belong to a well-established group of foliate-rimmed Longquan celadon wares produced during the Southern Song Dynasty, a time when kiln production reached its technical and aesthetic peak.
