A Pair of Diamond and Tsavorite Platinum Pins, Berlin, c. 1995

Brooches are perhaps the most creative pieces of jewellery of all: where a ring or necklace can quickly become uncomfortable if the design is too expansive, too angular or too large, brooches can take on unusual shapes that are quirky and playful without sacrificing wearability. They are worn on fabric and are endlessly versatile. They can be worn on jackets, hats or even bags to create glamorous accents. This pair of pins, which came to us from Berlin-Dahlem, demonstrates this in a particularly vivid way. Both pins are hand-forged from solid platinum wire. The metal, which is forged flat in this area, unfolds in expressively curved, almost painterly lines and seems to imitate the movement of the gemstones it carries at its ends. A brilliant-cut diamond in one pin and a bright green tsavolite in the other are set in half shells and mark the end points of these flowing forms. Tsavolite, a rare green variety of garnet, was only discovered in East Africa in the 1960s, where it is mined in Kenya and Tanzania in particular, and is captivating with its vivid, clear green color. The unique pair is signed with "Xing" in fine hand engraving on the backs. There are no limits to how these two pins can be worn and combined. Whether individually or together, one on the left, one on the right, on the hat or on the lapel - they invite you to try them out in a playful way.
