Pair of kibana, carved wooden ornaments used in Japanese Buddhist temples placed on top of columns or at the corners of beams so that they can serve as guardians, carved in the shape of mythical lion-like creatures called shishi. Each kibana features intricate workmanship, with finely carved details including flowing manes, powerful legs, and the open jaws of the shishi. The sinuous lines and ornamental motifs add a sense of movement and vitality to the sculptures. --- The kibana are in good condition. There are minor signs of wear to the wood consistent with the period. Please refer to the images for further details. The word "Okimono" derives from Japanese and literally means “Object to be placed,” composed of the kanji "oki" (置き), meaning to place, and "mono" (物), meaning object. These decorative sculptures were particularly appreciated during the Meiji period toward the end of the 19th century, thanks to strong demand from Western countries. Japanese sculptors and artisans had already demonstrated their skill in working with materials such as lacquers, bronzes, and netsuke, thanks to their excellent carving and inlay abilities. Subsequently, some of them turned to carving ivory, horn, and blocks of wood, notably boxwood. Among the most important schools of sculpture, we remember the Tokyo School founded by Ishikawa Komei, as well as notable sculptors such as Shimamura Shunmei and Yoshida Homei. --- We will package your item with the utmost care and entrust it to DHL, BRT, or FedEx, which will handle delivery within 1-3 days. The certificate of authenticity prepared by Luca Mastromauro, a Japanese art expert, will be delivered to the buyer. --- 651
