A RARE CHINESE ORMOLU AND PASTE SET STRIKING VERGE MANTEL CLOCK GUANGZHOU WORKSHOPS, CIRCA 1800 in the manner of Henry Borrell, London from the Guangzhou workshops, early 19th century. CASE: stepped square platform base on splayed feet, the body decorated with engraved foliate and geometric designs, each corner with projecting scrolled and pierced foliate mounts, pierced back door, the engraved arched top with floral mounts and surmounted by a ball and spire finial DIAL: 3.5ins (9cms) white enamel. Roman hours, Arabic minutes at the cardinal points, brass spade hands and centre seconds, adjusted by a paste-set knob above the dial centre, red and clear paste-set bezel. MOVEMENT: Two train fusee, rectangular plates, the backplate profusely engraved with flowers and foliage, a cartouche with generic signature. 36cm high NOTE: This clock case is based on a design used by Henry Borrell, London in various clocks for the Chinese market.
