‡ A SET OF EIGHT PAINTED AND TAPESTRY UPHOLSTERED CHAIRS ITALIAN, MID-19TH CENTURY, UPHOLSTERED IN 17TH CENTURY VERDURE TAPESTRY The high backs depicting seven exotic birds and a deer in wooded landscapes, above floral seats, on scroll carved legs and feet joined by cross stretchers 117cm high, 56cm wide, 60cm deep These palatial chairs are illustrated in a late 19th century black and white interior photograph (see fig.1) of a large tapestry hung room in an unidentified Italian palazzo or possibly a French chateau. It is interesting to note that the two baroque style console tables and the mid 19th century centre table, illustrated in the same archival photograph, appear to have very similar ornate carvings to the present chairs indicating that the chairs and centre table were either made to match the two consoles tables or the whole suite of furniture was commissioned in the mid 19th century to furnish the grand interior.
