A very rare early George II Octafoil Tea Salver made in London in

The Salver is modelled in the very rare octafoil form, being plain in design with a raised rim with eight curved sections. The Salver stands on four cast rounded, shaped, feet and is engraved in the centre with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a foliate scroll and strap work cartouche. The Salver is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the reverse. As well as being engraved with its original scratch weight. Octafoil salvers were made between 1710 and 1730, however very few were made and they only occasionally appear on the market. This is only the second we have offered over all of the years. As Michael Clayton observed, “ of all shapes, the octafoil salver is one of the most satisfactory forms.” An example by John East, London, 1720 is shown in in “ The Collector’s Dictionary of Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America.” by Michael Clayton, Plate 463. A further example by Augustine Courtauld, London, 1714, is shown in “The Huguenot Legacy, English Silver 1680-1760, from the Alan & Simone Hartman Collection”, Page 338, item 83. An ocafoil salver is also shown in use in the painting, “The Strode family at Tea” (1697-1764), Tate Gallery London. A very fine example by William Darker 1728 is in the Colonial Williamsburg Collection. The Arms are those as used by Gilbert Ironside who was Bishop of Bristol (1661-1671) and his son Gilbert Ironside who was Bishop of Bristol in 1689 and then Hereford from 1691-1701. Gilbert Ironside the elder (Bishop from 1661-1671) did have four sons. They could relate to one of these (in later years) or a descendant of one of these. An image of Gilbert Ironside the Younger is attached. Edward Cornock was apprentice to Henry Grant, 9 th February, 1698, for eight years. His first mark was entered as a largeworker on 14 th July, 1707. He had workshops in Gutter Lane 1723-31, which is where this salver would have been made. From surviving examples of his work, it would appear that he specialised in the production of fine Salvers and Tobacco Boxes. Height: 1.5 inches, 3.75 cm. Diameter: 11.45 inches, 28.63 cm. Weight: 30 oz.
