After Benedetto da Rovezzano Attack on the Vallombrosan Monks of San

pencil, 13.5 x 18cm; unframed, This drawing, by an anonymous hand, is after a marble relief by Benedetto da Rovezzano and relates to a series of reliefs executed by the sculptor between 1505 and 1513 for the tomb of St Giovanni Gualberto in the church of San Salvi, Florence. The project was abandoned in 1513 owing to internal divisions within the Vallombrosan Order, and the subsequent history of the reliefs is complex. By the later nineteenth century, 'The Attack on the Vallombrosan Monks of San Salvi' was preserved in the Bargello, Florence, together with other reliefs from the same decorative cycle.
