ALBERT NAMATJIRA, Untitled (Dingo Chasing Kangaroos), c.1945

ALBERT NAMATJIRA Arrernte language, 1902 - 1959 Untitled (Dingo Chasing Kangaroos), c.1945 hand-painted carved mulga wood Boomerang 72 cm long signed front: Albert Namatjira; bears inscription verso: Aboriginal Handicraft, Hermannsburg, Central Australia; PROVENANCE Aboriginal Handicraft, Hermannsburg, Northern Territory Private Collection, New South Wales thence by descent Private Collection, New South Wales Albert Namatjira is celebrated as one of Australia's most significant First Nations artists, renowned for his distinctive watercolour landscapes of Central Australia. Less widely known are his paintings on traditional objects, including boomerangs, which reflect the development of Aboriginal art and craft production at Hermannsburg during the mid-twentieth century. Born at Hermannsburg in 1902, Namatjira became internationally recognised for his evocative depictions of the MacDonnell Ranges, with their towering ghost gums, rugged mountain formations and luminous desert light. His paintings brought the landscapes of his Arrernte Country to audiences across Australia and beyond, establishing a distinctive artistic legacy. This painted boomerang represents an intersection between traditional Aboriginal material culture and the emerging market for Aboriginal art and handicrafts at Hermannsburg. During this period, painted and decorated objects were produced for visitors and collectors, providing an important source of income for artists and their communities. Bearing Namatjira's signature on the front and an Aboriginal Handicraft, Hermannsburg, Central Australia inscription on the reverse, the work reflects the historical context in which Aboriginal artists engaged with new materials, artistic practices and audiences. As an object associated with the Hermannsburg artistic tradition, the boomerang offers an insight into the broader creative environment in which Namatjira worked, beyond the watercolour landscapes for which he is best remembered. It reflects an important period in the history of Australian First Nations art, when artists were establishing new avenues for artistic expression and commercial recognition. © ALBERT NAMATJIRA / Copyright Agency, 2026
