Alessio Mazzarulli - Frida - 02 (n.761) - Dolls series

Frida - 02 (n.761) - Dolls series The measurements are: - collage: 50.00 cm x 40.00 cm Acrylic painting on shredded paper on canvas I create paintings using acrylic colors and thousands of small pieces of recycled paper: everyday paper is transformed into art instead of ending up in the trash. This work represents a conceptual evolution of the artistic project "Not your doll," a series born to explore and denounce the objectification of women and gender-based violence. Through a meticulous mosaic made entirely with fragments of recovered everyday paper reused to create art, the icons of art history are deconstructed and reassembled. Iconic figures, images of women observed and idealized, are here stripped of their aura of passive perfection. Historically, the figure of the woman in art has often been reduced to a silent muse, a "doll" of aesthetic perfection shaped to please the gaze of others. With these works they stop being the Renaissance" dolls to be admired and become living figures, literally rebuilt from fragments of reality, of current events, and of everyday words. No longer objects of others' gazes, but fragmented and powerful presences that invite the viewer to look beyond the superficial aesthetic. A piece with a strong visual and social impact, ideal for contemporary collecting attentive to themes related to the role and image of women in society. With Frida I tackle a different and complementary aspect: she is the ultimate representation of anti-doll. She has always self-represented herself by challenging the male gaze, displaying her imperfections and categorically rejecting the beauty canons of idealized beauty. Reconstructing her face through this multitude of chaotic fragments of recovered paper enhances her complex and layered identity. The technique used wonderfully blends with the visceral and imperfect strength of the character. This work is unique and original. Each work is securely packaged, wrapped and protected for worldwide shipping, with an Authenticity Certificate included. I use the courier directly provided by Catawiki and a tracking number will be provided for the shipment. This work will be shipped without a frame and without a stretch because the work will be shipped rolled. The canvas is larger than the painted dimensions as the larger surface is useful and necessary to stretch the canvas on a frame. It is recommended to have the work stretched and mounted by a trusted professional who can also advise on a suitable frame if desired. The images showing the work in interior settings are for illustrative purposes only and proportions may appear different. The actual dimensions are those indicated in the description. Different light sources can give different colors to the photos. For more photos and information, contact me! Thank you. *** Important notice for international (non-EU) buyers: Customs duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping costs. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility. The amount should be between 10% and 20% of the artwork value. Born in 1974, I am self-taught. After an initial period dedicated to sculpture there was a long hiatus lasting almost twenty years. Since December 2014 I resumed with the "two dimensions" for reasons of time and space, neglecting sculpture and dedicating myself to acrylic paintings. I love painting abstract landscapes but lately I have been pushing myself to paint faces of people both imaginary and real. For me painting is about "freezing time" in that exact moment; one of my canvases is often a faded memory and therefore my works are "worn, eroded by time". Sometimes the subjects of my paintings are glimpses of walls also eroded by time, with moss and mushrooms that — over time — grow on the surface. The passing of time is the main theme of my works. Coming from a wonderful experience with clay manipulation, I love sculpture, the third dimension, the sense of touch, and my paintings are often characterized by reliefs that are perceptible to the touch as well as to the naked eye. In this recent period, after several years during which my works were made from bits of recycled paper forming figures, I am pushing myself to explore Optical Art where I use painted wood disks arranged in lines and grids repeated with mathematical rigor which, when viewed up close, seem to form a colorful abstract painting but the more you move away the more a portrait emerges made from many painted wooden disks. Violence against women is a theme that characterizes almost all my works when I reproduce female faces, precisely to give them a voice when they do not have the strength or courage to report the fact that they are not their partner’s dolls and cannot be mistreated or worse, victims of violence.
