Alla auktioner / Konst & Grafik / Amleto Costa Dalla (1929-2024) - Ballerina
This screen print by Amleto Dalla Costa shows three elongated female figures placed side by side and can be read as successive variations on the same silhouette. The bodies are greatly simplified and almost entirely without modeling, with Dalla Costa deliberately making the white of the paper an integral part of the composition. Against the bright turquoise background, the subtle contour lines and soft pink and mint accents acquire a light, elegant feel. The repetition of pose and profile creates rhythm, while small differences in clothing and color distinguish the figures from one another. Characteristic of Dalla Costa is the combination of feminine elegance with an extremely clear graphic form, in which line, plane, and color matter more than a lifelike representation. Amleto Dalla Costa (Milan, 1929–2024) was a versatile Italian artist, illustrator, designer, and photographer. He began at a young age as a draftsman at the animation studio ARS Film of Nino and Toni Pagot, and later worked in graphic design, advertising, and fashion photography. From the seventies onward, he increasingly devoted himself to his autonomous art and became best known for paintings and screen prints of elegant, highly stylized female figures. His visual language is characterized by flowing contours, large flat areas of color, and an extensive simplification of form and detail, with his background as a graphic designer clearly recognizable. Women and the female portrait form an important recurring theme in his oeuvre. Dalla Costa exhibited internationally throughout his long career and worked with a variety of techniques, from painting and screen printing to sculpture and photography.
